Facial Nerve Decompression

Facial nerve decompression is required in cases where the facial nerve is injured resulting in facial paralysis. The decision to decompress the facial nerve is taken depending upon the onset and severity of facial paralysis as well as the result of certain investigations such as HRCT temporal bone, electroneuronography, electromyography, etc which may have to be performed. The procedure is performed via a transmastoid approach in which an incision is taken behind the ear. It is done under general anesthesia. The patient usually requires an overnight stay in the hospital following the surgery.
