Stapedectomy

A teflon piston placed in situ to replace a fixed stapes

This is a surgery done for otosclerosis, a disease involving fixation of the stapes (hearing bone) due to new bone deposition. The surgery involves bypassing the block by making an opening through the fixed plate of bone and re-establishing the transmission of sound waves by using a suitable prosthesis. This is usually done under local anesthesia with sedation.
